Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Bellingham Public Schools. Volunteers play a vital role by helping every child explore their passion for learning and prepare for a broad range of educational and career opportunities. We appreciate your contributions to our students’ growth.

Application Process and Instructions

All volunteers are required to complete the online application which includes a disclosure statement, review of policies and procedures, volunteer orientation and upload of a photo identification. This information is used to perform a background check through Washington State Patrol, a requirement for all district volunteers. 

Approval Process

The approval process can take up to one week from the time the application is completed. Applicants receive an email confirmation upon approval which is valid for two academic years.  You may log into your application and go to My Checklist to check your volunteer status or ask an office staff member at your school.

Volunteer Placement

Parents/Family Members: Please contact your student(s) teacher or parent organization for volunteer placement.

Community Members: Approved volunteers who do not have a school affiliation should contact the volunteer coordinator to identify a proper placement.

Fingerprints

Enrichment Instructors and those working alone with students with administrative approval must be fingerprinted through the Human Resources Dept.  The fee is $70 and valid for two years.  Please complete the volunteer application and select ‘Enrichment’ as the type of volunteer. You will then be directed to sign up for a fingerprint appointment.

New Volunteer Orientations (NEW)

Volunteers who are new to Bellingham Schools, do not have a school affiliation and require assistance with a placement are required to attend an orientation. This informative 1-hour session occurs the second Tuesday of each month school is in session from 9 a.m.-10 a.m.

Volunteers Driving Students

Volunteers who can drive students in district vans will need to begin the Driver Approval Process with the administrative assistant of the school their student attends or with the athletic administrative assistant of the school their student attends if athletic or club related activities. No volunteer is allowed to drive students until this process is complete.

Pam Sinnett “Nana Pam”, volunteer at Wade King and Parkview elementary schools

Nana Pam brings love, warmth and contagious laughter and spirit to the school community she serves.

Through the gift of music, she creates an inclusive space that fosters belonging, hope and positivity. As a former early childhood educator, she carries with her years of classroom experience and is passionate about continuing to serve students during her retirement.

Naaman Hinton, volunteer at school locations districtwide

Naaman is a bright light and beacon of positive positivity for all the students and staff with whom he interacts.

He exemplifies a One Schoolhouse spirit by volunteering weekly at 15+ school locations spanning the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Bob Nelson “Grandpa Bob”, volunteer at Silver Beach Elementary School

Bob Nelson, known as Grandpa Bob, has volunteered for years at Silver Beach Elementary and is loved by staff, parents and students alike. 

Grandpa Bob walks his grandkids to school and then volunteers daily in the kindergarten program at Silver Beach. A kindergarten parent shared, “No one deserves an award more than him. He is so patient with the kindergartners, and is not afraid to get in there and get messy.” 

Betsy Rocks, multilingual learners volunteer at Bellingham High School and Sehome High School

For years, Betsy has volunteered each day in Bellingham Public Schools. 

Alternating her time between Bellingham High School and Sehome High School, she works with students in the multilingual learners program and inspires with her expertise, care and support.  

As a bilingual volunteer educator, Betsy empowers those she works with to learn, thrive and develop lifelong learning skills. Her work embraces the diversity of our community and helps assure all students feel supported and loved.
